Finished!

I've always wanted to make an armature. I've had a lot of time on my hands lately, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I went out, bought all the materials I thought I would need, and got started. The brown fur color wasn't my first choice but Marshals didn't have any furry fabric. It worked out, though!

Prototype 1

I crochet the fur around the armature, but I did it kind of weird. I wasn't satisfied with it but I decided to press forward.

After I got all the feathers on and it was painted, I realized I totally screwed myself with how the feet were. I was running out of materials, so I put that one off to the side and started a new one with the knowledge I gained from prototype 1.

I took progress shots this time!

I improvised with how I put this together. I realized I messed up again with the hands/feet, with that I didn't make any way for them to attach to the armature... and I baked them. At least the toes move! Not enough to grip with one hand but it can hold small objects with both hands. The next one I make will have more range in the hands, as well as gripping feet.

I started to crochet the fur. I improvised here, as well. Starting with the strip of black that goes down the back, tail and down each of the legs, I expanded out with the brown fluff yarn until I was able to crochet the edges together.

This one is going to have ears! Not sure what they'll be made up of, feathers or yarn. Decided to go forward with painting and getting the fur finished up. Straggler yarn everywhere.

I skipped a few steps but here's a gallery of shots when I had added the yarn dreads, feathers, beads and detail paint over. It took me around 3 days to make him. :)
Hello!

I've been meaning to get this guy fully rendered. I drew this line art in flash a few weeks ago. I liked how it turned out, but since then this character has evolved into something more. I thought I'd do a sort of throw back to my earlier style. I always loved other artist's progression art dumps, and perhaps more for myself than anyone else, I need to see how far I've really come. I'll post that at the end of this post.

I've talked about not being inspired to draw ever since I started college. A lot of it has been a lack of motivation, but taking those drawing classes made me almost retreat to a blank slate. My drawings throughout school looked like those that I have criticized both on the internet and my peers as being not 'good enough'. Instead of worrying about what I wanted it to look like, I was worrying about how accurate my anatomy was... it was very demeaning towards myself and I stopped drawing all together, which I realize is the last thing needed when I had an art block as big as I did.

So, long story short, this is the first piece that I've drawn start to finish since I've gotten out of college. I'm sure that there are some issues with it, but I was mainly concerned with just getting something to a state that I was comfortable showing others, or even simpler, just to be able to say that I did something this weekend.

I finished this last night, and as I was looking over it this morning, I realized that I could go a lot further with it. I had sort of rushed through the painting process in order to 'finish' it last night so I could go to bed. I didn't want to leave it like that... so I painted over it this morning and come up with this!

I think this is a big improvement! The character pops out from the background and features like the hair, tail, markings, anything that is glowing has more definition. I am much happier with this, and I've learned that I must not end the process prematurely.

As promised, here is that art drop I mentioned in the beginning of this post. These are snippits taken out of my 2006/07 sketchbook. At this time, I was just starting college. There are a lot of fox-type animals, and cats... little obsessed at this time.

Long time, no post! So... this isn't animation or drawing, but here is a puppy I made with Sculpty! The painting was fun, but I learned a lot of what not to do when painting future sculptures.

There has been a bunch of exciting things going on, and they are all pushing my creativity to try mediums that I've been afraid, in a way, to attempt them. The fear of failure is becoming easier to push aside so I can focus on what I know I can achieve, and this has been accomplished by being thrust into a program I was rusty in.

After fumbling around for a bit in it and feeling like I was not good enough to pull off the project that was in front of me, my stumbling around became less and less. My confidence in my abilities are slowly building up.

Surely, I feel I will be using this blog for more and more.

I did it. It's going to be over.

Graduation is in three days. :]

I didn't think this time would ever come. I've been anxiously waiting it's arrival for four years now, ogling at my dream dangling in front of my face. I faced an obsticle that was College, the only thing separating me from that aspiration of being a character animator.

Now I can truly call myself one. I am a character animator!

I know that college wont be my only feat that I'll have to pass in the upcoming years. In fact, I'm prepared for the worst. However, after these past couple years I've shown myself that this was not a spontaneous quest, and that my dream could easily be tangible.

I have to remember, though, that these things will not come to me. They will not pan themselves out in front of me, hand me a life plan and let me be. There will be disappointing moments, there will be moments of doubt, of pain, of sleepless nights, but I just have to tell myself that I am doing something that many people admire. It is a privilege, and as my family always taught my siblings and I as we were growing up: Privileges can be taken away.

Anyways, here's a demo reel! Take a look! If you have any comments, please, leave it down below. :)
I was really intending on posting my weekly animating assignments but I don't feel like they are worth sharing. They definitely didn't turn out as well as I thought they would, though I was rusty from a term without animating anything so that could be why I was having such a hard time.

This week is different, however! I feel much more satisfactory about this week's assignment, in which I was supposed to animate a criminal escaping from jail. The assignment only called for the keys, though I finished so early (it's due on thursday) that I feel like I could polish this up in that amount of time.

Maybe I'll post those others, if not for something to be proud of, then simply for reference of how -not- to go about animating... we'll see.Kayli Edwardshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02406290723516622519noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5448914481520826977.post-32282969881932237842011-01-18T10:50:00.000-08:002011-01-18T11:20:23.275-08:00New term with renewed focus!I've sort of had an epiphany of sorts over the break. I'm going to be graduating in the fall and I really, honestly, have nothing to show for it. That may be me being hard on myself, because if you were to look in my hard drive you would see animations that are on their way to being polished, but they just sit there because I feel like it would be more work to go back and try to fix what I've learned from doing them rather than just starting over.

So that's what I'm doing. Not all the way, but in a sense.

I'm in a couple classes (the other two are required general education classes), that if I try really hard to get the most out of them it will, without a doubt, push me along to a budding animator.

During the break before this term started I read a couple articles on non-verbal body language, and I'm half-way through an actual book on that subject right now. I'm definitely seeing the opportunity to use some of this knowledge in my acting choices for future characters.

I've also acquired my own copy of the Animator's Survival Guide Book! Finally, geez. I'm a hundred pages into that and I just received it yesterday. My goal is to finish it this term, along with that body language book.

Why? Not only because reading those will give me a stronger background on which to animate upon, but also because one of the classes that I'm taking I will be doing work that should, in theory, be good enough to put on my reel.

...I just felt my nerves tense up just writing that sentence! I have such a fear of growing up and of failure with trying to make something of myself that I've let it get to me up until this point. I've let my brain create excuses along the line of 'oh, I have more time to finish this and get better. I'll get to this the next time around'. I now see that having that attitude hasn't gotten me anywhere. I've watched peers that I've gone through college with surpass me in skill... and it's a horrible feeling. And now is the time to change that.

But it's not only that; I have something else that is holding me back socially.
The thought of networking -- making conversation (small talk! aaah....) with people who I know nothing about and then KEEPING the contacts open and alive for the remainder of my career?

With my social anxiety, talking to my peers and maintaining a relationship is hard enough, let alone someone in the industry.

I'm hoping that all this will change over the course of the term. I'll be posting my progress with more regularity than what I have been, now that I am actually focusing on improving myself. I will become an active part of the 11 Second Club and read up on as many animation blogs, journals, techniques, and anything else that I can find in relation to animation in order to better myself. I cannot be the shut in that I have become, focusing on myself negatively. I've seen myself do good things without knowing anything about animation, so with this added background I should do just fine.Kayli Edwardshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02406290723516622519noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5448914481520826977.post-4738415831576759892010-05-04T11:41:00.000-07:002010-05-04T11:43:47.509-07:00Texturing Progress

Kayli Edwardshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02406290723516622519noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5448914481520826977.post-38912598349412942572010-05-04T11:16:00.000-07:002010-05-04T11:41:23.210-07:002d Animation testsHeres some videos of some animation i've been doing. The whole term was dedicated in working on these two projects, one an environment and the other a character. In my case, these are for the same story.

Kayli Edwardshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02406290723516622519noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5448914481520826977.post-40613732963905787352010-04-14T09:59:00.000-07:002010-04-14T10:07:38.733-07:00Texturing Assignment
Here's the start to the assignment that I'm working on for my Adv. Lighting and Texturing class. Of course I haven't gotten to the textures. The lighting in terms of the major shadows is laid out, though there is going to be more going on for the lighting in the scene. I might change it to dawn or dusk, but that's a maybe. The composition right now has been 'o.k.'d by my teacher, though, and that's mainly what this render is showing.

Can you guys point out anything about this that seems off, before I start to texture it?Kayli Edwardshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02406290723516622519noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5448914481520826977.post-13962023797844354852010-04-13T20:02:00.000-07:002010-04-13T20:21:18.059-07:00Character designSketches of some character design for a short film i'm putting together. This is my first post. I have much to post on here! Once I get caught up with posting, I will be able to post my creations in groups according to class or subject, or however it works. Right now, though, I'm just going to post everything that I deem worthy to be shown. :)

I'm not too good with keeping up with posting regularly in terms of describing what goes on in my life on a day to day basis. If anything is extremely important, I will post something about it. If nothing has been posted by me in months, it's probably because I'm swamped by classes. Sit tight and wait for the term to be over, and you'll see stuff start to appear.

Otherwise, go ahead and comment -- good or bad! I'm a growing artist, and I know this, so my work is far from being perfect. The only way I'll know about it is if someone lets me know that they noticed something. I'm big on constructive criticism, which is different than straight criticism. If nobody comments, then I just assume that nobody is watching what I post and that discourages me from posting anything.... sooooo! :D Comment and make me happy!

So anyways, here is the stuff that I've been working on up until this point!

Here are some of the paintings that I have done, made in Photoshop. Some of these are pretty big, so just keep that in mind when you click.

Thanks for visiting!

Kayli Edwards

Kayli Edwardshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02406290723516622519noreply@blogger.com0
